Report on fitness facility outlining the design, technical and safety requirements

The Health and Fitness Center at Washtenaw Community College started in 1966 to offer the members of its community both occupational and academic programs which have been designed as per their needs. It is located at 4833 East Huron River Drive, Ann Arbor, MI. The main goal of this fitness facility is to help the students, community members and staff in acquiring a whole range of intellectual, physical and social skills so that they stay healthy and become productive citizens of the country.

The health & Fitness Centre can be a stand-alone facility or can be a part of larger development.

The facility should follow the Universal design for universal access which increases or enhances the usability of the facility for a broad range of population ranging from younger to older, including tall, short, female, male and people with or without disabilities. All kinds of people receive benefits from universal design and some of the universal design features which are found in this facility are (About Us: The Health & Fitness Center, 2012):

  • Weather Protection at the door for entrance into facility
  • Exterior entrance with power door openers
  • Extra chairs in order to accommodate people who would like to take part in aerobics while remaining seated.
  • Impact of site shape and various contours should be according to the orientation and location of the building.
  • Creating staff awareness and training regarding usage of National telephone Relay System.
  • At least one set of TTY Telephone in the facility for people with difficulty in speaking or are deaf.
  • Different surfacing material on the pool deck, several foot away from the pool so that someone with low vision can detect the distance from the edge of the pool through the different texture of surface material underfoot.
  • Several accessible changing rooms and toilets and some should be left-handed and some right-handed.
  • Written material and contracts or brochures in large printed or in audio cassettes form for members with vision disability.
  • Uncluttered pool decks for safety of blind or low vision people.
  • Entrance is welcoming, clearly defined and attractive.
  • Site is quite accessible with proximity to roads and links to public transport.
  • Parking provision and vehicular circulation is guaranteed for cars, motorcycles and staff parking space.
  • Accommodation for coaches, emergency vehicles and service is ensured.
  • Allowance for future expansion for new trends and activities are there.
  • External factors like security environmental issues which can have impact on the overlap design or location or orientation of the building of facility is also considered.

 Description of Facility

The Health & Fitness Centre is well equipped with all the modern exercising gadgets and equipments with all the safety and technical specifications which are required for an effective and quality fitness facility. Some of the features of the facility are listed below (About Us: The Health & Fitness Center, 2012):

  • It has 25 yard lap pool.
  • One pool is warm water activity pool for winters.
  • Fitness floor is quite expansive with free-weight, cardio and circuit strength training equipments.
  • Elevated and well cushioned jogging/ walking track.
  • Coed whirlpool
  • Activity based child care called ‘Kids in Motion’
  • Full-sized Gym for volleyball as well as basketball.
  • Four group exercising studios designed specifically for Yoga, aerobics etc.
  • Tennis court with a platform
  • Conference or education classrooms for knowledge development regarding fitness.
  • Locker rooms with most of the amenities.

 Features of entrance area

  • Parking space with both accessible to vans as well as cars.
  • Visible and easily understable signage which indicates parking, entrance etc.
  • Standard width parking space
  • 96” wide  for ‘van accessible’ parking space
  • Detectable warnings at the curbless walks which cross the traffic lanes so that people with vision disabilities get to know about possible hazards.
  • Smooth transition from  entrance to the  walks and loading areas
  •  Weather protection through converted entrance
  • Accessible parking near the entrance

 Features of locker and Dressing Rooms

  • Accessible route to the shower, sauna etc through the locker and dressing rooms.
  • The dressing or changing rooms are 5% accessible at least.
  • Dressing areas serving different genders have clusters of its own and at least one dressing room is accessible.
  • As seen in figure 2 clear floor space in eh dressing room for a parallel approach to the bench.
  • Clothes hook at maximum 48’’ height.
  •  Full length mirror for both seated as well as  standing users
  •  Outswinging door in smaller dressing rooms (Fitness and Exercise Spaces, 2008).

 Features of Accessible lockers

  • Lockers must be 5% accessible and within reach of even seated users.
  • Lockers with easy-to-operate handles or latches which do not require pinching or holding.
  • Benches in locker room or sauna rooms have enough turning space
  • Enough clear floor space with wide accessible routes in locker rooms (Howard, 2008).

Features of toilet rooms

  • Public and common-use toilets accessible and on accessible routes too.
  • Some of them are single unisex toilets
  • Toilets have conventional stall and clear floor space for accessing dispensers or lavatories.
  •  Lever faucet handles as they are easy-to-use with accessible soap and towel dispensers.
  •  Shower stalls within reach and of specific size too. Shower stalls in series due to space constraint.

Features of fitness Area

  • The fitness equipments are located in accessible manner and one of the equipments is located at the end of the row along with the accessible route.
  • Placement of equipments in such a manner that some of them can be used by both standing as well as seated users.
  • 60” diameter turning circle for people on wheelchairs for easy manoeuvring.
  • Enough clear floor space to leave walkers or any other things while they are using equipments.
  •  Accessible routes between  rows of equipments (Howard, 2008)

Pool and Spas

  • Entry stairs and handrails all around the pools
  • Accessible routes going to and all around the pool area.
  • Pool lifts and pool stairs, transfer system, sloped entry, transfer walls and movable floors for pool safety. (Howard, 2008)
