Good health & safety have been termed quite important. This memo report has been designed to protect the major hazards which might occur within the laboratory. Major safety concerns which shall be taken into consideration within laboratories have been enumerated in this report. All the people involved with the teaching of laboratories would be required to have training sessions which would help to possess knowledge for preventing, treating & reporting towards any laboratory related injuries (Fred Hutchinson, 2012).
Some of the laboratory safety regulations which shall be taken into consideration have been described in the memo report. Firstly, proper supervision shall be there within the laboratory. While working in a chemical laboratory, proper safety measures shall be taken into consideration. Best protection against the accidents within the laboratory would be through the presence of trained supervisors, lab instructors, and departmental staff (HM Government, 2010). Secondly, eye protection shall always be there while dealing with different types of chemicals in the laboratory. While performing a task in the labs, use of sunglasses or transparent glassware shall be done. Use of light weight shields, prescription glasses hall not be used while conducting an experiment in the labs. Lastly, protective clothing shall be worn within the laboratory. No shorts, short skirts, sleeveless t-shirts, garments, etc shall be worn. Long lab coats along with aprons shall be used while conducting an experiment in the laboratory (Fred Hutchinson, 2012).
Some of the steps which shall be kept in mind in order to decrease the level of hazards within the laboratory as under:
Þ Fire drill is conducted once a month.
Þ Each laboratory attendant is provided with a dust coat and protective eye, hand and footwear for use within the laboratory (HM Government, 2010).
Þ All new personnel are given a six-hour induction course in safety procedures (HM Government, 2010).
Þ One member of your staff, Don Sutherland, has been trained in first aid and Red Cross procedures.
Þ The first aid kit is located on the front wall of the laboratory.
Þ A respirator is contained in the first aid kit.
Þ Fire extinguishers are located in prominent positions every five (5) meters around the laboratory walls. They are serviced regularly by the fire department (HM Government, 2010).
Þ Two fire blankets are located at each of the two entrances to the laboratory (Fred Hutchinson, 2012).
Þ A stretcher is attached to the wall outside the laboratory.
Þ The laboratory has a fume cupboard for odorous substances.
Þ A ducted exhaust system operates above each of the four work areas in the laboratory. The exhaust system is not linked to any other existing ventilation system (HM Government, 2010).
Now we need to act upon this memo report & decrease the number of accidents which take place within the laboratory.
