School Background:
Scoil Briahein A Trí is located in a midland town of a population of 6000 people. It is a fully vertical ( Junior Infants to 6th class) and co-educational school. It is not a Gaelscoil. It has 373 pupils, 29 teachers and 9 Special Needs Assistants. The school has a two-class Special Educational Needs Unit. The school has been given DEIS Band 1 ( Urban) status by the Department of Education and Skills (DES) in acknowledgment of the socio-economic disadvantaged background of a large number of the families that make up the school community. It is a Catholic school under the Patronage of the local diocesan Bishop. In recent years a sizeable number of immigrant families from a variety of diverse backgrounds have also joined the school community. The school is housed in a sixteen-classroom permanent building and four blocks of temporary accommodation. There are two large school yards and one large grass playing field.

In a recent Whole School Evaluation (WSE) report the DES Inspectorate commended the school on the degree to which the school, especially the Principal, were compliant with their obligations to the National Education Welfare Board.

A local historian, through primary sources that have recently become available, has traced the school to a school that split from an original Kildare Place Society school in the 1830s on becoming a national school according to the wishes of the local catholic clergy.

Liam has been teaching in the school for over twenty years. He is perceived by the majority of the other teachers as something of a ‘lone practitioner’ rarely engaging in any of the professional conversations in the school around whole-school initiatives or policy-development. This has, from time to time, caused for some tension in his relations with his colleagues and with the school Principal. From his own perspective, Liam feels threatened by the emergence of The Teaching Council’s Code of Professional Conduct ( Teaching Council 2012). For some time now, Liam has not been getting from his teaching career anything that he feels contributes to his life, either personally or professionally.

Margaret, though aged 42, is in the second year of her teaching career having previously worked in advocacy for a number agencies concerned with the welfare and protection of children and then proceeded to undertake the Hibernia Higher Diploma in Arts (Primary Education). Her Principal holds Margaret’s teaching in high esteem and has asked Margaret to facilitate some professional development sessions with the teaching and care-staff alike around the issue of childhood.

Martina is in her first year of teaching in the school. Her class is generally well behaved and she has little difficulty in the behaviour management of the group. However, there is one child in the class who frequently exhibits aggressive and challenging behaviours. Before approaching the other teachers in the school and the Principal as to what strategies the school have employed in the past for this child, Martina refers her Psychology of Education notes in order to come to understand why this child’s behavior might be as it is and to find a theoretical framework on which to base any proposed strategies.

The Principal in her review of the Special Education needs of the children in the school has noted the considerable number of children who have been diagnosed with a variety of language difficulties. She has asked the teacher with management responsibility to review the range of strategies being employed by the mainstream and learning-support teachers to meet the needs of these children in the education setting and to research any further strategies that should be employed by the school for future use.

Scoil Briahein a Trí is situated geographically in an area of mixed socio-economic status and has been recognized by the DES as a DEIS Band 1 (Urban) school. In a recent WSE by the DES Inspectorate it was reported that ‘the school achieves mixed success in the degree of parental involvement apparent in the school over the duration of the evaluation process.’ The Principal has decided to undertake a close study of the levels of quality home-school relationships including the levels of parental-involvement in the life of the school and the contribution this currently makes (or does not make) to the education of the children.
Paragraph 4.1
As a DEIS Band 1 school the school also undertakes a series of programmes and initiatives aimed at tackling the educational disadvantage of many of the children. In the same WSE report these actions were identified by the Inspectorate as ‘contributive to an evidenced equality of outcome for all of the children across the broad curriculum and, specifically, numeracy and literacy attainment.
