Professional Learning and Significance
Learning in any form is important and render great benefits for the people who abide by the conventions of learning. Learning is essential for living as it paves the way for growth of an individual in any sphere of life. There has to be an art of learning which one should follow so as to reach the top in any field, therefore in student life the emphasis has to be laid on learning so that the professional learning could be taken up. I believe that personal and the professional learning is both important for a satisfied professional life, and especially in the contemporary hour when there is a great need for switching to a job which serves to all the interests of the people. I myself am a hardworking man, and I am looking for a job that can provide me with higher levels of satisfaction, because I believe in giving 100 percent to the workforce I get to work with. Learning is an art and also is a kind of training which aims at training the people, and improving their skills in the learning process (Roncesvalles, C 2003). I am confident in this aspect that I would learn much if I adopt the process of learning. Learning can be called as the other name of the development of the over-all personality of the person. So, far I have taken up many jobs like first job of mine was as a teacher of all subjects to the students of the primary school, then I took up another job as a teacher to the higher level students i.e. adolescents and specifically I taught English to them. Also, it was fortunate that is as allotted multiple opportunities like monitoring the management and taking part in the administrative jobs. After having a considerable experience of teaching I had a completely different experience of working as a store manager where my job profile to deal with the shop owner, I had to manage whether all the goods are displayed properly or not. Then, I took up the duty of a business operative in a biscuit company, where I had the responsibility of picking and the packing of the goods (Webster, A 2010). My final job included a kind of event management work where I switched to different things like organising the meetings and other sport events also.
By making it known that I have had worked in so many different areas is that I always cherished being a part of different atmospheres. The different profession in which I have been so far were good for the learning and it added to my experience altogether. Being in different jobs gave me the opportunity to handle different aspects of the human personalities and gave me different ways to deal with them. In today’s time it is seen that it is necessary to not be satisfied with any one thing and thus keep oneself engaged in many activities at a time. This acts as a challenge to the potential of one’s self and puts a check on the calibre which one has for the prospects. Learning ensures development and development is something which is dynamic and therefore should be continuous in nature. In order to ensure development at a professional level one should therefore be open to learn new things each day and to make the best of the surroundings. The approach to learning should not be objective, like it shall not be something which is unidirectional because that way it would be very restricting and would not allow free flow of thoughts and would be a hindrance in interaction. On the other hand the approach to learning shall be seen as something subjective and that can also be referred to as the dualistic or the pluralistic approach in literature (Andrew, H et al 2005). In a profession there should be left enough scope for one to grow and that can be done if one doesn’t feel restricted and therefore allow a free flow of the learning and gaining knowledge from wherever one can. In terms of my approach to profession, I can say that I was being pluralist in my approach to learn or to gain knowledge. I would like to reflect upon my achievement of professional learning even in different jobs which I was switching to from time to time. My first job being that of a primary teacher made me to deal with the students who were kids and were faring at the lower levels of the maturity, the experience taught me to become highly patient and the techniques that how can I take a lead of the situation gradually. The atmosphere in which I was living for a couple of hours in the day was much immature but it taught me much maturity and taught me to further instil confidence and discipline in the little kids along with their educational polishing. My next job was that of a teacher again, but this time the students were adolescents and it was a little more challenging. I noticed that there were many episodes in which the students had their own way with the things. Teaching such students who belonged to the age group of 16-20 was tough because I sometime s had to resolve to their standards by being their friend where I had to shed the role of a being a strict teacher. It was a unique learning experience because I was always open to what they had to say and do yet I imposed discipline at the right time. English is such a step which had to be taught to the students with respect to all the semantic systems and the grammatical structures. There was also much of a problem with the same because the language had to be taught to them, it was challenging because of the cultural diversity among the students. After teaching my choice of being a shop manager was entirely different and it brought greater management capabilities in me. I had good skills of management earlier but being in a practical circumstance I actually got to improve upon many aspects related to managing the items in a store. It was a bit difficult because I had to manage many people under me and therefore being a coordinator to them and still commanding and reminding them of their duties was a big task. It was something which included not only administrating the workforce but also to take care of the goods whether they were good in place or not. Being a manager to a shop it became my duty to take care that all the customers were entertained properly, I had to make it sure that timely and cordial communication was taken place with them. I had to realise that being a professional it was my duty to promote the shop and see that the owner is well in collaboration with the requirements or the needs of the shop. This way it can be brought that, I was adhering to a pluralist approach while I was learning new things and gaining knowledge. I never wanted to become so objective that I handle everything in one direction or in one way and so I was much open to changes and adjustments, which I think was helpful for my professional growth and was much productive (Brunner, L 2012).
In professional learning it is important to discuss about the Kolbe’s model of Experiential Learning; there is an experiential theory of learning as given by Kolbe. The theory provides a substitute for the traditional moralising role of the classroom and the conventional approaches as are used in the classroom and the way they claim to change the personal development cycle. The theory poses that learning is a vast process which revolves around cognition and it involves continuous adjusting and engaging oneself into the environment round. The theory emphasises on a fact that experience matters a lot when it comes to learning therefore the same is temporary and superficial if it is instructional. Thus, the theory advocates that knowledge is something creative and it is gained only when one experiences a situation. As an individual I can also very well relate to Kolbe’s Theory of experiential learning, because being into different professions only I could enhance my skills and learn better. According to the theory, experiencing a particular situation in a profession one gets exposed to the uneven times, the disagreement from various people, reflections, thought processes and various modes of actions. It becomes obvious that the learning styles of the individuals would change with the changing situations and by the passage of time it is realised that learning was a holistic procedure and it was necessary to experience the same because of the vigour that was present in the environment. According to the theorist’s illustration in a graphical model, learning process is elaborated as something which is cyclical in nature. The model had four different styles of learning which were taken from two dimensions: concrete abstract and reflective active (Bergsteiner, H et al 2010).
The next important theorist who can be discussed in this context is Schon Donald, he asserts that in a profession the problems are always there, they are inter-connected with one event or the other. It is the action of the managers which decide that how far the problem goes, it is about the utilisation of their actions, whether the actions they use are productive or they are repulsive to the situation in which the managers find themselves. It asserts that with the professional practice there occurs many images for the professionals and they are the ones who determine the central values which would be dominating on the profession. This reflection on action is a direct attempt to bring out what actually the professionals do. The ‘Reflective Practitioner’ from the beginning only strongly advocates against any kind of empirical or the technical reasoning behind anything. Therefore, the same is never can be the base for gaining a proper professional knowledge (Smith, M 2012).
Symbolic Interactionism, is all about communication, i.e. it is based on the patterns of the interpretation which one makes out of a communicative piece and the adjustment which one makes with the other individuals. It emphasises upon the value of communication and that how interacting with the other individuals at the workplace is positive and can be fruitful. It is about the interaction between the people which occurs because of the different roles which they are assigned, the words they use, the gestures which they pose, and the regulations under which they work. It is about the meaning which the individuals during an interactional process provide to the environment in which they live. The interactions which occur is based on many variables like the human behaviour, the processes which go in the society and also the self of the individual and the concept which one carries of one’s own being. This interaction is also there in the professional domains also because being professional also contains the basic personality features and thus they symbolise the type of the relationship which one forms (Nelson, L 1998).
Multicultural Awareness in a Profession
A profession also teaches one to fare equally with the people around, it needs to be seen that disparities among the people arise because of the different backgrounds they are from, the difference which is there because of the myriad ethnicities, ideologies which might be clashing with one another and the values. While my work and the various jobs which I took up the ones which were most challenging was teaching because there I had the responsibility to take a lead of the situations because I had to instil a knowledge in the other. It was difficult because I had to give them lessons in one language but it was difficult because the students didn’t speak English as the only language, they were from diverse backgrounds and therefore it was tough to make them understand things at one go. Also, it was challenging because the textbooks sometimes were talking about certain places and the people and therefore during my profession I had to make myself fair and free of any prejudice among any of the state or the people. This was an art which I learnt during the profession of teaching because only instructional reading of the books was not my motive as an educator, but it was to make my students with respect to wisdom. I always projected myself as a neutral human being who doesn’t believe in any hierarchies in the system and therefore I always welcomed all my students and let them have an equal opportunity to raise questions and come up with queries (Yan, C 2008a). This experience was even strengthened when I was working as an event manager where I had to organise the meetings and so it included a lot of field work, there I learnt to deal with different personalities who belonged to different cultures. In any profession it is important to take care of the important principles, the one is to believe that very being can be different and that one cannot behave in the way we idealise them as to behave, there can be the myriad ways in which a person can react and thus to keep in mind that one’s conditioning of the family makes one know that a person always carries his/her own cultural identity and therefore we should accept the person as they actually are. In a professional domain, in order to ensure a healthy bond among the members of the organisation it would be necessary to not make or assume any generalisations and the basic stereotypes about one another should not be formed ((Yan, C 2008b). Therefore, for rendering a happy atmosphere in the organisation and to support the other so as to provide the benefit to the company it has to be realised that nobody should be categorising the other as in minority or majority. This way it should be known that professional development is badly affected because one or the other would be unhappy in a situation and therefore he/she would not be rendering anything positive for the situation. Different races and the ethnicity should be seen as the two which are positive for anybody because they in a way contribute to the worldview of the people, and thus adds to the benefit of the nation. The concept of liberal pluralism is almost central to the development of the outlook towards the society and subsequently this theory also helps in building a perspective towards the professional associations which one has. This conceptual is a step towards resolving the problematic with the rights of the people that is the minority rights. Moving towards pluralism is always an important and significant idea because it allows people to acquire more liberal an attitude towards the people they live with. One should be able to look around and accept that there are the social members who are from heterogeneous cultures and when those cultures interact with each other, there comes out to be a productive and creative output. Liberal pluralism is much alike the literary concept of liberal humanism which again is dominated by the free flow of ideas and entertaining the idea of a lenient attitude towards the other. Once this ideology is accepted by the people in the professional domain then it would only become easier for the people to accept the fact that everybody else important and productive as oneself. The people might be different than you but they are not lesser than you in any aspect. This is what I also experienced while I was working in different scenarios (Audard, C 2012). That is while teaching I always wanted to maintain a clean outlook towards different cultures and if I lacked somewhere in my spirits I always wanted to check on myself and ask my senior teachers to help me out with the issues I could not resolve. Whenever it came to the cultural understanding of the students it could be seen that the interpretation of the students differed heavily from one another. First it was tiring to see some students with blank faces and it was exasperating because I thought that I was perhaps unable to make them understand things. I found it tough earlier but then after gaining experience by interacting with other teachers I got to know that it would require me to teach them by a neutral perspective and thus I should be aware about various cultural processes that undergo within time and space.
Professional growth through Interpersonal Communication
The professional learning in any form is important, and interpersonal communication is the key to all the aspects of the human relationships. At a professional level it is seen that many conflicts arises out of the hierarchical systems in the organisations. It has personally happened to me when I worked as the Event Manager, it was observed that people tend stereotype you on the basis of some past experience and then see you in the same light. The profession of an event manger was such in which I had to get in touch with the people belonging to all the classes and backgrounds, some were from lower class strata in the society and the others were from the higher. The people sometimes were devoid of any basic etiquette in the profession, it was more of a learning experience because there I had to make cordial relationships with them by talking to them with much calm and by retaining my poise. I even had to keep quiet in the situations when I had to maintain balance with the others, being this one my first job I learnt that silence is also a mode of communication and sometime it is the best way out in different situations. In the job of picking and packing much of the operations were done in group and therefore there was a great importance of the joint effort which one had to give to each other. It was about the behaviour to which one adhered in the group and that in turn affected the quality of the group (Ramirez, M 2005).
Group Dynamics has to be respected and should be accepted that people need to work together and that should be taken up only in healthy spirits. In a group there are always seen the interaction between the personalities of many different people and the power which one holds in a group, and these two parameters determine the behaviour of the group members and their intentions. It has to be understood that the fact is posed on one and the other working in a group, the function which each member of the group would perform will in a way affect the larger function of the group. Interaction in a group is important and it always remains in flux because it contains the fact that there are multiple ideologies which are always there in interactional set up because there is seen a continuous play and mingling of cultures. It should be realised that the growth in a profession cannot be one way, in any profession while working along with a group one has to see whether there is an equal participation from all the members of a group. Once equal participation is seen then it can assure that all the viewpoints are taken into consideration, it would also make sure that social relationships which would exist among the group members are healthy and that each member of the group is being recognised (Corelli, C 2009). In a group a positive side of the interaction can only be taken place once the objectives of the group and the ultimate purpose are time to time reminded about, to all the members of the group. I believe that working in a group would always make one grow stronger and would prepare one to make the best and the effective social skills which are there. Being in a group would make a professional go easy with the environment and let one evaluate the self in comparison to the other members of the society. Time management in a profession is also the key to the professional growth it helps the individuals in a business to take out time for each activity effectively. It is usually seen that people align too many activities for themselves and later they fail to access the activities in time. It can be seen it is because there is no proper slotting of the activities or the tasks which are pending in their list. Managing time is important so as to attend to the tasks timely; priorities are always important in life and that is what much needed to be allocated well. A business is much unpredictable it cannot ensure whenever a new responsibility would turn up or when would a new task be waiting for employee to work upon. Procrastination is something which shall be avoided at any cost, it is a tendency to postpone a task, it is harmful for the quality of the work which one does because that way it would only make the professional more lazy and repulsive towards the task. While teaching also, I always took care that the syllabus should be completed well in time. I had to see that I cover all the important topics first so that the students could get ample of time to manage their syllabus before the exams (amangemnetstudyguide.com 2012). It has to be realised that the targets and the goals should be set so that with respect to time things are managed well. Time is an important element of a healthy professional life, it is important for each individual to come for work well in time and take the charge of the duties well in time again. Time management is nothing about the theory but to adapt to the practical routine, it would b done my making a plan right from the morning that what are the goals for the day. The priority list should be made with respect to the urgent tasks of the day and ascending on to the less important tasks. It is usually seen that social networking eats away all the important time which one has in the routine. It creates a kind of the stickiness for the individuals at work thus making them forget that they have other duties to be taken into consideration. Therefore time management is something which has to be realised and organised by the concerned individual only. It is something which cannot be dictated to the other. I believe that I keep much patience and logical skills within myself that I can manage things well in time. In all my past jobs, I never left anything in the middle, earlier it was a little uncomfortable a routine that I thought to procrastinate certain tasks, and then I made myself understood of the fact that procrastination only adds up to the laziness towards a particular task (Vasconcelos, C and Ramirez, R 2011). Hence it can be stressed that professional development means plurality and its acceptability. In order to ensure that one grows personally and professionally then a liberal attitude towards learning has to be posed. Whenever a person in a profession is open to accept the things and the people as they really are, if the person is able to accommodate to the variety of cultures and religious intermingling, then there can be very bright chances of knowing growing as a professional. It has to be learnt that a different ideology or a different cultural nuance is determined by the presence of multiculturalism, the thought process which is pure and practical is never the one which would interfere with somebody’s categorisation. The professional learning is all about knowing the difference between right and wrong, being honest and responsible towards the duties assigned to you (Simon, M 2003). In the present hour when the people are multi talented and they want to switch to different jobs, it is essential to remain a little open and unconventional so that no problem occurs with relation to the traditional set up which could affect the growth of the individuals at the workplace.
