Economics essay on: Presence of Lebanese in Australia
The presence of Lebanese in Australia has been seen in three different waves starting from 1880 – 1920, 1947 – 1975 & lastly, 1976 which marked the Civil War in Lebanon. Since the beginning of the Civil War, there has been a decrease in the levels of Lebanese population in Australia. There has been a rise in the number of Lebanese population who return from Australia. This has shown a significant rise in the demand for return to Lebanon (Batrouney & Batrouney, 1985).The number of Lebanese present in Australia cannot be indicated by the Lebanese born but also by its descendants. The population of Lebanese born in Australia has been estimated to be 70,325 persons in the year 1996. Out of the entire population 52.5% were males & 47.5% are females. The total Lebanese population in Australia is about to touch approximately 2, 50, 000 (Australian Lebanese Historical Society of Victoria, 2000). Though, the entire Lebanese population is seen all over Australia but the two places where in majority population can be seen are New South Wales (NSW) & Victoria.
The habit & culture of the Lebanese population present in Australia can be seen with respect to the levels of creativity & inventiveness. It has been noticed that, the Lebanese population would value individualism which strive to display wealth, high levels of success & gain influence.Another habit which can be seen amongst the Lebanese population refers to portray loyalty with friends as well as family. Personal honor amongst the people involved is referred to as one of the major qualities of the Lebanese population. Friendly relationships with the family members will act as one of the central ideas of the Lebanese population.
One of the major challenges which are being faced by the Lebanese population refers to the challenge about individualism v/s collectivism. It has been seen that, the Lebanese population in Australia belong to the collective community. Whereas on the other hand, the Australian population belongs to the individualist community. This has been rendered to as one of the major challenges for the Lebanese population sine they are focused upon people as compared to the completion of the task and at the same time, they trust the people around blindly which might act as a problem for them in the long run (Khalil, 2008). The Australian population is task oriented where in for them the main priority is the completion of the tasks rather than focusing upon the people involved. For the Aussies time has been regarded as Money whereas for the Lebanese population spending time with people would be regarded as the best experiences. It was reviewed that, the Australian population had much less drive to help the Lebanese population since they belonged to the collectivism community. This led to the major challenge for the Lebanese population & they felt secluded from the Australian population (Khalil, 2008).It has been seen recently reviewed that, people belonging to the Australian population emphasizes more on personal achievement & portray high levels of competition. The Lebanese population on the other hand mainly emphasizes on family and group goals rather than working individually. The Lebanese population mainly portrays such type of challenges while working under the same workplace. While working under the same workplace, people belonging to the Australian population are inclined towards loneliness as they do not get along with people very well. Whereas, on the other hand people under the Lebanese population have a fear of rejection as they meet & get along with more number of people. The Lebanesians have faith in people & hence, they tend to get betrayed easily by large population.
One recommendation to curb the challenge mentioned above i.e. presence of collectivism v/s individualism has been discussed as under. In order to curb the same, the Australians shall try & involve more and more Lebanese population by the means of group activities, meaningful interactions, etc. This will help the Lebanese population to be in direct contact with the Australians & reduce the challenge of collectivism v/s individualism (Australian Lebanese Historical Society of Victoria, 2000).
