Introduction
The case study focuses on a brief explanation of how a department of 90 personnel is diversifying completely to form a private institute of their own. The name of the organisation is ‘Virtual Consulting Pty. Ltd’ and it would sell their services to a broad spectrum of clients including corporate in the industries of manufacturing, transportation, health industry etc. the next part of this paper includes and details the importance and significance of leadership and also the challenges that are faced by them while incorporating and implementing a scheduled plan of action for setting up a new firm.
Leadership as a means of success
Leadership is of vital importance for any organisation as they are often looked upon to set an example for the team to follow. Thus, his performance and the impression directly affect and are related to the performance and action of the immediate subordinate under him. The role of a leader is very important in an organisation as it shows the direction which would be followed by the employees in that particular organisation (Bartlett 2005). There is always a need for a good leader and a group performer in an organisation. The performance of the group is directly related and contingent to the motivation which the group members get from the leader and also from what degree of influence and control does the leader has over his group members. The maximum efficiency and effectiveness the group members should be interdependent on each other to achieve a common goal and should not work individually in pursuit of a common goal. This would only be achieved if groups are defined as sharing similarity, common fate and proximity on an event which especially requires fulfillment of a particular task. The results or output of an individual can be measured by the output which they deliver, but the result of the leader is measured by the collective performance of the group. The group essentially needs to be influenced positively so that it results in overall growth of the organisation. Henceforth, determining the actions of the past and is unlikely to influence the times to come unless and until the performance of the group and the group members is measured at least once.
In the case study, on Virtual consulting, it is imperative for Director General David Jones and the Project Manager Peter Davies to work in tandem. This is true for a number of reasons. It is important for the first and the foremost reason that these two are the top notch senior management under which the various departments with operational heads would be built. These operational departments would be required to follow the requirements of the set plan as per the needs of the respective clients of the organisation. The various departments that are planned to build for this particular private organisation includes that of Finance/Accounts, Sales & Marketing, Human Resource, Administration, and Information Security etc (Theodory 2009).
The organisation can plan to appoint Head of Department (HoD) for the respective different departments as such is their diversified need. The private organisation is also looking to plan regional offices in different parts and controlling them from a centralized location which would be used as the central head office and can be a proposed strategic location.
As far as the roles of the leaders is concerned, it is direct and important because of the reason that they are the ones who would be requires to delegate responsibility and authority to the various head of departments. They would also be required to control and analyze the daily activities of the various departments. This would ensure compliance in the organisation and would also ensure that the set plans and objectives are being achieved and progressed upon on a regular basis. This particular project also requires a lot of team effort as a pre requisite for achieving the desires outcomes and the results. The various decisions that are undertaken to implement and shape a dynamic project like these consistent costs and benefit analysis. It becomes really difficult for the top notch senior management to do the peripheral activities over and over again to judge whether to go in for a particular decision or not. Thus, the managers often expect the subordinates to be pro active and let the top notch senior management to think and consider the more vital affairs of the organisation rather than doing a simple break even and cost benefit analysis of various small level decision that come up on a daily basis for an organisation like this. It is also important for these managers to empower their subordinates accordingly as they are now likely to take the managerial decisions which has been taught to them by their senior managers only. Thus, there is a potential of chaos and also possible mistakes by the subordinates which can result in a dilemma for the managers. Thus, leadership is just not limited to the fact that it guides the team members to work in a specific manner. It includes many other important dimensions such as that of managing the affairs of the team, ensuring that the right frame of mind and motivation is inducing the operational level personnel to drive the overall efficiency and the productivity of the organisation. It also focuses on building of team effort and carefully analysis the personality of an individual so as appropriate delegation of authority and responsibility is handed over to him for management (McGrath 2004).
Conclusion
This short case study highlights the basics of what incorporates of building up a new project right from the scratch and what are the respective attributes that incorporates of a new project. The role of the leader in ensuring team work is important as he guides the initial movements and also sets the tone for the work culture and ethical issues that govern a particular organisation. Thus, it can be concluded that leaders possesses the capabilities to influence their team members positively especially during the initial few days of the project. The explanation provided by the leader is also important in order to totally comprehensive understanding of the process and also ensures the flow of knowledge management within the organisation.
Competency Achievement Report
Competency Development per Knowledge Area
Various students across the university promise and make resolutions as to what different they would seek to implement in the current semester to be satisfied overall by their performance during the completion of the semester. Suring this unit of study, my personal competency objective was to be clear and specific about the topics which had to be issued and studied during the semester. I had also made the objective of explaining the concepts to other students and individuals so that I might be explain them the concepts which I have learned in this unit of study. This would also lead me to the conclusion that I have understood all the concepts comprehensively if I am able to explain it other people completely. The completion of the written assessment (including this paper) has given me immense knowledge about this unit and I have managed to develop a degree of interest for further research on the topics like Public Relations in general and Leadership in particular (Cullan 2003).
Target area for further professional development
After the initial stage of goal setting, we are approaching the point of almost the completion of the unit of study. This time frame has given and offered ample opportunities in terms of modifying my future plans accordingly. The understanding of the various topics and the various issues has broadened my overall abilities to get an understanding of the corporate and management issues which are vital source of acquiring a suitable skill set which turns out to be vital importance for any particular organisation. Thus, the future professional development is also being improved and incorporated right from the current times so that it flourishes and become exemplary. The importance of understanding the different views of other people is also understood and gained by students after the successful completion of this course. As a student, I would like to build further on improving my skills and follow the activities that I enjoy doing the most as then I can specialize upon the same to provide exceptional results in that related field. Thus, the target in the next semester and other Unit of study would be to identify the various areas where I can specialize and gain immense knowledge about a particular field or an issue (Kerr 2005).
Summary
The aims and the objectives set out during the beginning of the semester was to be clear about the various concepts that would be offered during this unit as a part of successfully completing and securing a decent grade in the unit. As the semester progressed, that set objective gradually changed to seeking interest in a particular subset of the various issues at hand. Thus, focusing a particular subset encourages the role of specialization which is vital for overall efficiency in the society in general and for the corporate organisation in particular.
Commentary on Team Performance
The list of the points that worked well in the group activities
The class discussion was an excellent source of exchanging the thought process and levels of understanding. It led to the wider and overall understanding of a relative topic and theme from all possible perspectives and related angles. As an example- If a student was to write their own points over a particular topic or a discussion, then the discussion within a group leads the students to understand what important points did he or she missed out and what might be an appropriate and a comprehensive way to answer a particular task or a question. It was also necessary for students to practice open speaking and presenting their views and also explain the same to fellow colleagues which is of vital importance in the today globalised world. The class also had a variety of students from different ethnic groups, it becomes necessary to understand the basic generic concepts from their point of view as well as the same plays an important role in today globalised corporate environment where organisation and firms are increasingly improving and building up contacts across national boundaries.
The list of the points that did not work well in the group activities
One of the things that was quite disappointing was lack of 100% participation from all the students. While there were some students which did not turn up for regular classes, there were others which chose to observe and limit their respective participation. This led to a limited portion of the class to participate and the optimum efficiency from the group as a whole was not delivered due to the lack of responses from certain group members. There can be a lot of reasons for all the students not able to participate in the activities and group discussions of the class and the main ones include reasons like lack of understanding of the issue at hand, lack of self-confidence and fear of public speaking etc.
Changes that can be implemented to bring about successful and improved team performance
One of things that the management of the university can practice is to ensure participation from all the students. They can make the attendance compulsory and can also conduct assessment task inside the classroom. This would not only encourage the students to participate in the class, it would also lead the faculty to believe that the students are actually devoting their own efforts for the completion of the task at hand. This is important as students generally tend to avoid the work load by either copying the work from other sources which is referred as plagiarism and also there should be efforts from the academic institutions for reducing such cases and not just leave it to the student to understand the importance of this issue through a printed paper with points explaining why one should not plagiarize (Fiedler 2010).
