Benefits of LIS degree to me
Intersection of information, technology and creativity by human beings are the three key components which define the today’s age. Keeping this idea in mind, I opted for the master’s degree in Library and Information Science course. I was always under the impression that after the completion of course I will get job in the area of information resources specialist, researcher, meta-data analyst, documentation specialist and creative project manager etc. Surprisingly, I got the job of a training resource manager at EBSCO Ltd.
My job profile comprise of giving trainings to clients of my company about various products which my company is offering them. As a Training Resources Manager I try to respond at customers’ request in the most effective manner. This helps my company in maintaining relationship and also retaining them for future business. My quick and effective respond also result in high level of satisfaction among customers, thereby benefitting my company. Clients discuss their problems, needs, expectations and requirements with me and since I pose knowledge of information technology because of my LIS course, I can easily understand the same and thus I can also help my company in making their offering better and more customers friendly. My skills of navigating and managing information have also opened new doors of opportunities for me in my company.
I have shared my experience, job profile, reasons why I like this job, pros and cons of my job, key points about the company in which I work in a presentation. Though the presentation which I have prepared is based on my personal experience. In addition, I have also referred to the study done by Mr.S.Saleh through the journal named “A study of Library & Information Science Field” and “Benefits of doint LIS course” by Mr.R.Shenkel and Mr.C.Gardner.
library and information science can be defined as the blend of information and communication technologies, the relationship between information and knowledge, the cognitive and affective aspects of knowledge acquisition, and the interface between people and information. Each and every activity that human being does can be given a new dimension through the knowledge, advanced technology and expertise of professionals present in LIS.
There has been a major myth about the course related to library and information sciences that after doing this course, an individual can only work in a library. On the contrary, there are certain skills which are developed in a person through this course which can be used in the fields such as information resources specialist, researcher, meta-data analyst, documentation specialist and creative project manager etc. Thus a person just not get limited to a library after this course and many non-librarian jobs can be opted as a career opportunities on the basis of skills such as navigation and management of information which are some focused areas under this course.
Many successful businesses have been established by people by utilizing the degree of LIS. Take the example of Mr. Jill Hurst-Wahl who is a professor of practice at Syracuse University in Information school. Along with this he also runs a consulting firm where he provides consulting on initiatives related to digitization. So it totally depends on an individual that whether he/ she wants to limit themselves to the traditional career options or want to explore new areas of operation after LIS degree.
For me, my Master’s degree in LIS is just like an investment, where nobody can give me a guarantee with respect to my salary or position in future. I am not saying that after this degree I will become millionaires, but one thing is for sure, this degree has definitely provided me a set of skill which can make me stand out of crowd as far as my knowledge is concerned regarding the information technology. Graduates who believe in hard work and out of the box thinking have great chances to do something extraordinary in future after doing this course. The advancements in digital technology has resulted in substantial and continuous transformation in the field of library and information science .In order to take the benefit of rising career opportunities, , it has become very important and crucial for librarians and other professionals belonging to this field to keep pace with the changing time by adapting new technologies.
