ARTS Assignment study on: Music for Children
Music is a great art in itself. It holds a high degree of aesthetic expression within it. Music is soulful and therefore the way it expresses itself is beyond any age limit. Music cannot be taught but it shall be enjoyed and thus can be learnt eventually. It is just like the gift of speech and language which comes naturally to a child and that is how music also can be learnt naturally. The music is usually generated with the help of the musical instruments and as a part of the lesson scheme the instrument under focus is the Drums and Shakers which are hand-made and have been beauty fully crafted to render great sounds. It is a fact that the sound which is produced by Drum and Shakers is historical and has its roots in the African culture. Thus this represents that music can act as that medium which promotes the interaction of the two different cultures. If such a music and the handling of the music instruments is instructed to the children belonging to the age group 3-5 years, then apart from learning the music and the related training, gradually the child can get exposed to different cultural set ups and the associated customs (State of Victoria 2009).
Utilising Drums and Shakers in the Activity Room
Toddlers usually have the habit of playing since infancy. Their world is surrounded by rattles and toys. Thus, through the initial years of life their life is surrounded by the music they hear out of rattles. In fact when a baby is born, the sounds which he can relate to easily and gets attracted towards is that of a rattle. In the child’s journey from infancy to being toddler music plays a big role, so the idea to craft the Drums and the Shakers for the little ones is so appropriate. The instrument is made of the colorful paints on it and the glittery fabric which from distance only would look fascinating to the children. The young ones thus would have a take that instrument and do something unique with it (Music Together 2012). The sound of the drum would have the orchestral qualities and the shakers would act as the icing on the cake as it would produce the sound just like the rattles. The mix of both the sounds would be melodious for the toddlers and thus they can imaginatively use the instrument to produce the sounds they like.
Design of the Activity
The initial step would be to call each learner in the front one-by-one so that everybody gets a fair chance and time to play with the instrument. This way the toddlers would remain engaged with the instrument. I will initiate them to produce as different sounds as they can use the instrument. This would provoke a tinge of the competitive spirit in them, and they would want to produce a batter sound than the other. This would be short session not more than an hour so that the students can effectively get that what the instrument is all about.
Singing and Dancing
I have chosen a few lines of poetry from one poem each. The first is the I Want Teddy by John Jenkins and the other is Fur and Feathers by Paterson (Australian Poetry Library n.d.) The respective lyrics are:
- Teddy is left behind, and I am so upset
The tears sting. Where is Teddy? I am lost.
I look and look. Daddy and Mummy laugh.
- A match against the kangaroos
They played one day
The kangaroos were forced to choose
Some wallabies and wallaroos
The plan is such that with the help of these lyrics the children would first learn and hum these poems without any additional music by drums and shakers. I would encourage them to hear the contained rhyme of the poetic lines and then recite it out loud with suitable actions. This way the toddlers who might feel shy can also come up with different ideas and dance. The next step would be initiated by me when I would bring in the sounds, thus using the instrument as the background music. The drums and shakers produce a very strong sound and thus the whole session can turn musical and the children would definitely enjoy the music along with the lyrics of the poem. This is how I can ensure that learning through music would initiate their thinking, interaction with the class fellows and also would add an aesthetic sense through the developmental phase. This innovative session would further enforce creative learning in the kids ((Learning through Music 2007).
