IT & accounts assignment on: Computer network & cost analysis
IntroductionA computer network is a connection of two or more computers through a cable or wireless connection. Computer network enable computer users to share hardware, resources and information. Aside sharing information, the computer network enables users to share internet access.
The importance of networking two or more computers can not be overemphasized. Networking in computer is unavoidable. We need networks in most things we do in life.
I wonder what the world of computer will be without computer networks. In computing, networking is a way of connecting two or more computers together. When you network computers together, the computers can share information and resources with one another. Networking is a very vital and delicate area in computing. We can not really quantify the importance of networking two or more PC.
Computer network is very important for every business, no matter how small a business may be. Computer network helps in sharing resources. With computer network, so many computers can share one printer, scanner and some other hardware, which might be expensive for a company to acquire for every computer user.It is quite obvious that computer network helps to save cost for an organization. Instead of buying all hardware for each computer, one can just share one via the computer network
In addition to this, let us just think of additional space that will be occupied by providing printers or scanners for each of the computers in an organization. Networking two or more computer not only saves money but also saves space. This in addition makes the user’s environment friendly.
Do we ignore the communication aspect? No! Networking enhances effective communication among members of an organization or a company. With appropriate software, each computer user can communicate with other members or staff of an organization or company.
In addition to this, Computer network gives users the opportunity to use remote programs and remote databases either of the same organization or from other enterprises or public sources. The importance of having a computer networks are really numerous. Thus, it is a necessity for every organization or company. It makes effective communication possible and helps to eliminate unnecessary waste of time and duplication or resources. One can imagine the amount of time that will be wasted if members of an organization will have to move to a particular computer to print a document. Can you appreciative the amount that would be spent if the entire computer in an organization is to have its own printer? That’s quite enormous!
In summary, computer networks will help every organization to – reduce cost by sharing hardware and software resources; reduce cost; and increase flexibility and efficiency of any given organization.

Needs Analysis
Looking into the current facilities offered by the university, it must be seen that the following types of need could be analyzed. This would help all the campus situated in the main city to get linked with the main campus i.e. UniSA Whyalla.Þ Data Types: A system or a network should be adopted which would help the university in order to serve the various types of data such as bulletins, reports, pages on the web, accounting information, profiles of the teachers &the students as well. The network so adopted should be able to support ASCII as well as non ASC II. T should also be able to support different types of graphics including voice as well as video conferencing.
Þ Data Source: The second type of need which should be served by adopting any type of a network would be to create a data which would be used at all levels as well as supported by the end station. The data so produced would be able to be used in the most efficient manner by the use of Windows 2000, Dream Weaver & MSOffice including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, etc. The network adopted should also be able to support data managed on paint brush, net station, accessories, photo shop, media players, notepad, etc.
Þ Number of users at all levels: The number of users at all levels would be quiet high in number. They would majorly include the administrators; secretaries as well as the members included in the four main departments i.e. HR, Marketing, Finance & Management. The users included under the lowest level would majorly include the administrators who would be responsible to manage the entire system. The maximum number of users who would be using the network to be in touch with the main campus could be accounted to be 100:33 (regular users) UniSA Whyalla Campus, 30 users in the City East Campus, 7 users in the City West Campus, 30 users in the Magill Campus, etc.Majorly three levels would be supported such as Top Management, Medium Level & the lowest or the low priority level. The network management process would have the highest priority level. Most of the network processes would take into consideration the medium level priority & the last level network system would take into consideration the backup, transfer, speed transmission, etc. It must be noted that, the network management would consume low levels of bandwidth. The low priority level services would also be required to use appropriate services but it might get delayed as fair support would be required to manage each & everything amongst the entire city & the main UniSA Whyalla campus.
Þ Transmission Speed Requirements: The speed transmission would refer to one of the major requirements while adopting a network. The network which would be adopted by the UniSA officials should be transparent in nature. This means that all the users should have a fair knowledge regarding the same. Therefore, one of the major purposes of adopting the network at the UniSA Whylla campus i.e. sharing of documents, applications, transfer of files, etc should be done quickly with a click of a second. The speed of the LAN adopted at the university would be required to have a minimum speed of 20mbps within each LAN network so adopted. This would help to enhance the performance of the users at the university level.Þ Estimation of the load variation: It would estimate that, the users of LAN would generate huge amount of data. The estimated load days or months or hours would b from January to March. These two months would be overloaded with the usage of LAN since, large number of students get enrolled during these two months. The highest traffic volume could be approximately estimated to be from 8:00 in the morning till 6:00 in the evening, Monday till Friday. The major chunk of the students would get enrolled as well as the classes would be held from 8:00am-12:00pm & 3:00pm – 5:00pm. During the night, the traffic would be minimal.
Hence, depending upon the traffic levels mentioned above the following speed for LAN should be taken into consideration i.e. the average output for LAN during the work hours (8:00am – 6:00 pm) would be 0.2 mbps. The average output for WAN during the working hours (8:00am – 6:00 pm) would be 0.04 mbps. Whereas, during the heavy traffic working hours the average speed for LAN & WAN should be approximately 10.4 mbps & 6.4 mbps respectively.
Þ Storage Requirements: The network would require large storage requirements such as high amount of space in order to keep a track of each student, teacher as well as the routine campus data. The storage requirement for the network & each user would be estimated to be approximately 100 MB for a server space. The maximum space allotted would be 1 GB & the operating system would occupy 500 MB on each individual LAN server as well. The main campus i.e. UniSA Whylla would have 36 GB capacity. The other city campuses would have a minimum storage capacity i.e. 10 or 20 GB.
Þ Reliability Requirements: Both, LAN & WAN are the two main networks which would work in this case. These two networks would help the main campus to be linked with the other city campuses. Applicability of such networks would help in order to enhance the productivity. Keeping in mind the industry as well as the business standards, LAN & WAN are the two types of networks which operate 99.99% with 0.001% of error rate.Cost Benefit Analysis:
The cost & benefit analysis would give an in depth knowledge regarding which of the options to be selected & why. The tangible, intangible & a benefit analysis has been done in a tabular form. This shows how much amount would be initially required in order to get some amount of benefit from the same.
