Leading Health care organizations: Effective leadership
For any organization to function properly and achieve its goal effectively and efficiently leadership is required and equally important is the management of its resources. Leadership becomes all the more important in healthcare because of the complexities associated with the healthcare system that requires the linking of managerial activities to the world of medical or clinical practice. Leadership involves both the process as well as the property .Leadership it is the non coercive sway to shape up the goals of the organization, motivating your followers and also defining the culture of the group or organization. Leadership involves the set of distinguishing features attributed to individual persons who are perceived to be leaders. Hence it can be termed that leadership is the corner stone upon which the success of an organization can be built.According to Gautam (2005) leadership is not the only thing that drives an organization. Day to day management of the resources also help in ascertaining the amount of time and work that is required to run any kind of organization and not only a healthcare one. The management is not only related to the day to day activities but also tend to go on to the future planning of the organization. This kind of management also helps the organization to grow like a good leader would. Proper management functionality shall help the organization to maintain a sense of purpose while making sure that they do not falter at any point of time and do not divert from any of their goals set. In healthcare organizations diversion is never wanted as in this case and mostly more than most cases there is a direct risk to life which comes into the picture. Thus both leadership and management have to be considered as the flip side of the same coin when it comes to healthcare organizations.Importance of leadership and management:
As per Mcginn (2005) an effective leader is the one who can complete the rationale of the group while carrying out the main job that is the leadership which is necessary for success. To achieve success there are certain issues which should be understood and worked upon and they include motivation, shared vision, effective communication, good time management and situational approach. Taking steps regarding the above mentioned issues and enforcing them effectively in relevant context of healthcare management makes the difference when it comes to the success of a leader. In order to motivate a group of people it becomes essential to understand their needs and once the leader is able to understand it he sure can motivate the people but the bigger task lies in the fact of maintaining the momentum of the motivation. Then the necessity of good communication skills becomes a point of contention. This is because if the leader is not a good communicator he would not be able to share his vision of success and thus shall not be able to motivate his group of followers. Equally important are the time management skills because as we all know “Time is life “and wasting time is equivalent to wasting life. Thus leadership emphasize that he as well as his followers should focus on the importance of the deadlines to achieve the organizational activities. Thus all the above factors state the importance of leadership in the healthcare organization as they share the vision, planning as decision making in the healthcare sector.
As per Parks (2005) management of resources in the healthcare sector is equally important as the leadership. The management of resources in the health care sector tends to focus on the face to face aspect of the functioning of the organization which can range from managing the funds to managing the activities of individual persons, allocating the budgets to different activities thus handling the accounting issues and various others. The healthcare organization needs to focus on the accurate usage of the resources because until the resources are not managed accurately they will lead to their wastage which in turn will affect the efficiency of the organization. The two main points on which the management focuses on in the healthcare organization are:
Less wastage of resources:
As per American College of Healthcare Executives (2005) effective usage of resources is extremely vital for any organization. If the management of the resources is not efficient enough this could lead to a direct impact on the performance of the organization. This impact necessarily will be negative as the resources are the basic blocks which are responsible for the growth of any organization. If any organization is lacking in resources the results which it delivers shall not be up to the mark. Thus the utilization of these resources is something that the management of an organization has to look into with focus and attention. It can be said that an organization in today’s competitive world has to manage its resource with the utmost care to survive and to grow.
In time availability of resources for the users:
According to Hutton & Moulton (2004), this is another important issue on which the management has to provide their focus on. The resources in the healthcare organization will be the medicines, the nurses, the doctors. It becomes very essential that all the resources should be available to the users on the right time because if these resources are not available on time it will cause some very serious issues in the organizations. Thus it becomes the responsibility of the management to take care of these issues and thus should make the resources available well in time so that the users are not affected by it. If done on time will also bring goodwill to the organization.
Differences between leadership and management for future planning:
As per Mohammed (2003) a good leader is known by the fact that how he or she emerges and influences their followers. Leadership mainly focuses on the planning aspect in any organization rather than the implementation of any particular issue. It basically focuses on the instrumental aspects which can range from understanding, compassion, goodwill, sharing of the vision or sharing of the ideas and many more. Also when it comes to the leaders they tend to focus more on team building issues or on the formation of the groups as they believe in team work, and where the work can be done at a faster pace and with much more efficiency. This is thought so by most leaders as in a team if one cannot perform any task the other can do it and the deadlines could be met. Also leadership basically showcases the ideas that are running through his or her mind and also the energy, hope and imagination and motivation which it carries with himself and also handing out the loyalty to his colleagues.Talking about the role of the management in planning for the future in healthcare organizations it could be said that management mainly focuses on implementation of the issues that arise as a result of planning procedures. As per Mohammed (2003) it mainly focuses on the instrumental aspects such as organizing, manipulating, investigating and integrating. Thus both the issues that of the leadership as well as the management head in different directions if the implementation scenario is concerned. This is the main issue due to which tension arises between the leaders in healthcare service providers as well as the managers within the same system. Both the leaders as well as the managers work in the same organization with different or we can say the opposite goals. The needs one of one maybe entirely different from the other and thus they may not go along. But as we all know that both the leadership in the healthcare organization as well as the management are extremely important for the organization to run effectively and efficiently hence we cannot choose any single one of them as we need both of them equally. Also important is the fact that there is crucial requirement that we need to focus on both the aspects so as the organization can be benefitted as a whole. Although there have been always cases of negativity against the management principles it should be kept in mind that the management allows the organization to ascertain wither the current policies are going as per the requirements or not. And it is only by ascertaining the current performance can the future plans be made and put into place for the success of the organization. Conclusion:
As per CCL (2006) there are certain levels of consistencies that have to maintained by the management and the leadership of the healthcare organization. The organization shall have to understand that both leadership and management both have equal importance in the functioning of the organization and that one cannot be considered as a proper manner of functioning without the other and hence this has to be a basis of comparing and contrasting both of them in any form of organization.
