Adolf Behnebelievedthat the architects of his period could be considered as part of two separate groups, utilitarian and individualist. According to him, utilitarian were the ones who depend on pragmatism and purpose, while individualists were more concerned with uniqueness and principles. Both of the groups gave due importance to “purpose” of the creation but utilitarianwere more strict with the definition of “purpose”. They worked solely on the basis of motives and the usefulness of the construction. Individualists also gave importance to purpose but they believed that assimilation with environment holds no importance for the construction. They believed that their concern ends within the building only. Their work was based on the concepts of isolation and independence.
In his speech Theodor Adorno stated, “Freedom from purpose and purposefulness can never be absolutely separated from one another.” (1965). I agree with him that importance of ‘function’ element has caused architects to focus mainly on purposefulness of the construction. For every construction is derived from the end use and the means to accomplish the task. Great architectural buildings are formed only when architect’s imagination connects with the purpose of the building. Function provides rational element to the architect. This is evident as most of the modern architecture is focused only on the purpose or the motive of the construction.
In architecture, ‘function’ is a term that is consistent with the purpose or usefulness of the construction while objectivity (Sachlichkeit)relates to the aesthetics and the artistic element. Functionalists consider buildings as tools and machines for human beings. Functionalists do not believe that architecture is an art; they consider is as the necessary function for the society. They are mainly concerned with the motives that a building serves. On the other hand, architects with ‘objectivity’ believe that every building has its own existence and it needs not to be consistent with the surrounding environment. They do not follow the old conventional and formalities of the architecture. They believe that a buildingis anexpression of its residents, era and region.
