TASK
This assessment consists of five tasks, which relate to the case studies provided at the end of this task description. Select a case study, and then:
· Risk stratification and goal setting
o Complete an exercise pre-screening and risk stratification assessment to establish the client’s risk for exercise. Based on this assessment and in relation to the components of fitness, determine the client’s needs and goals. Goals should be stated using the following SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time bound) framework.
· Exercise testing
o Schedule testing and retesting at appropriate intervals within your plan to determine the effectiveness of your program. You should select tests that are able to validly and reliably assess the goals of the client and the target components of fitness. Exercise testing issues such as test order and rest intervals etc. should be considered.
· 12 week training plan
o Create a 12 week training plan that is designed to meet the client’s goals and needs. The 12 week plan should be split into logical phases and should directly relate to the client’s identified goals and needs.
o The 12 week prescription of exercise should demonstrate understanding of training principals and adaptation, which has coherent links to load, volume, intensity and recovery.
· Example microcycle and training sessions
o Provide details of one (1) micro-cycle (normally a week). Clearly indicate where this micro-cycle fits within the context of the overall training plan and include information relating to the exercise frequency, intensity, time and type (FITT).
o Then from within this chosen micro-cycle, detail two (2) complete training sessions. One session should be an individual training session and the other session should be a group exercise session. These sessions should each consist of a warm-up, main session and warm-down and should include all relevant information e.g. number of repetitions, training load, intensity, RPE, number of sets, and rest period (as well as any other information you deem important). Each of these sessions must be prescribed specifically to target the training goal of that session within the context of the micro-cycle’s goals.
§ In addition, the group exercise session should include appropriate instructional cues and modifications, in order to increase or decrease difficulty, for all exercises prescribed.
o Note: each training session detailed should focus on a different component of fitness.
· Justification document
o Write a 1500 (+/- 10%) word explanation document of your 12 week training plan. Think of this as a ‘walk through’ of your program, where you must refer to scholarly sources (peer reviewed literature, text books, etc. LECTURE NOTES AND UNIT MATERIALS ARE NOT APPROPRIATE) to explain your exercise prescription. This will demonstrate your understanding of the theory behind exercise programing. Included should be a discussion of how your physical prescription influences fitness on dimensions of health, wellness, and quality of life. You must refer to at least 5 peer reviewed references in this document using APA style (7th ed.) in-text citations, and produce a reference list that is correctly formatted to APA style (7th ed.).
Case Study 1)
Sally Sideburn has approached you to be her trainer. She has indicated that she is unhappy with her appearance and that she really wants to lose weight – she is 30 years of age, 170cm tall and weighs 80kg. She is generally well, with no family history of heart disease, and answered no to all questions in stage 1 of the ESSA Adult Pre-Exercise Screening Tool. She experiences no musculoskeletal injuries or pain during activities, but has been sedentary for some time now as she has lacked the motivation to exercise. Sally used to smoke approximately one packet of cigarettes each week, but quit two years ago after becoming pregnant with her only child. The birth of her child was the last time she was in hospital, but she recently had a check-up with her Dr, and after some tests, they determined that her blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels were all within normal limits. She is taking oral contraceptives, but does not take any other medications regularly.
Case Study 2)
Marcus Moonshine is a senior student at WishyWashy High School and is included in the talented athlete program for his performance in basketball. He has approached you as his PE teacher to assist in writing a training program to enhance his sporting performance. Marcus is 18 years of age, 183cm tall, and 82kg. He suffers from asthma and six months ago was transported via ambulance to hospital following an asthma attack. However, his GP has since told him that he is fine to participate in all training and sporting activities provided he carries ventolin at all times. He has never suffered any other medical condition, does not have any injuries, and has no family history of heart disease. Obviously, being an athlete, Marcus does not smoke or consume alcohol, and is very active. He currently trains vigorously twice a week for approximately 30 minutes per session, moderately twice a week for approximately 60 minutes per session, and lightly once a week for a 45 minute recovery session. He has a fair amount of resistance training experience and is proficient in both free weight and machine weight exercises.
Case Study 3)
Jason Jollypop has recently turned 21. He really likes attending music festivals but feels inferior when he sees other men in their oversized singlets with very large muscles (he is 181cm tall, 75kg with 15% body fat). He has decided that he would like to ‘bulk up’ in time for the summer festival season, and has come to you for a training program that can help him towards achieving this very important goal. Jason has no underlying medical conditions or injuries, and no family history of any kind of condition. He is a non-smoker, and takes his dog for a 30-45 minute walk 5 afternoons a week. He has trained in a gym before and is familiar with most exercises.

This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:
- be able to discuss the influence of physical activity and fitness on dimensions of health, wellness, and quality of life.
- be able to perform pre-screening and consultations to establish client risk for exercise prescription, goals and needs.
- be able to select and implement suitable exercise assessments to appraise targeted components of fitness.
- be able to use a variety of exercise modalities to design and deliver a short-term exercise program to achieve health and fitness outcomes.
- be able to provide safe and effective instructions to clients when delivering individual and group exercise sessions.
