Eco-Tourism

In literal term, eco -tourism could be understood as making as little impact as possible to the environment while visiting a place (Infotech, 2010). Eco tourism aims at encouraging wild life and habitats while touring. The prime focus of it is on local cultures, wild life, volunteering and learning new ways of living on our vulnerable planet.  It is about uniting conservation, societies and ecological travel. As per (TIES, 1990), eco tourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people”. For and increasing bio-cultural diversity, eco-tourism provides effective economic incentives, and it helps in saving the natural and cultural heritage of our planet. The concept of eco-tourism came in to picture in 1970s as a result of various environment movements, which has now became a crucial sector of tourism industry(Sanders, 2012). The tourists planning for eco-vacation not only enjoy visiting beautiful landscapes and also get educated on the roles of protecting biological environment and supporting cultures and economies. It is an opportunity for the tourists in contributing towards the conservation of protected habitats, wildlife parks and refuges. According to a U.S. Agency for International Development, many countries and their government do not have sufficient funds to protect the areas which are officially reserved for natural conservation, so it’s the tourists who visit these places help in generating funds by spending for their vacations for protecting these areas for future generations (Sanders, 2012). As noted by(Critchley, 2010), ecotourism is the purposeful travel to natural regions in order to understand the natural and cultural history of that particular environment, but need to careful while making opportunities beneficial to local people that it should not alter the integrity of the ecosystem. According to Critchley, ecotourism contributes to the conservation of the areas visited and also helpful in sustainable development of the adjacent areas and communities. The prime criteria of it is the local community involvement and income generation for them without affecting the ecosystem, Kenya wild life in Africa is an example for one of the prime ecotourism destination.

HERITAGE TOURISM

Victoria and Albert Museum

Introduction

Museums have been an integral part of heritage tourism. They have served the role of guardians for the local, national and international heritage; and they have provided the visitors into an insight into the different aspects of mankind be it art, history, science or fashion. However, the changing world has resulted in the need for museums to go beyond their traditional job of collecting, preserving and displaying artifacts. Decreasing aid from Government has made the museums heavily dependent on their private investors and visitors for support. The newer generation of visitors has increasingly sophisticated demandsfor exceptional service and experience qualities. Museums are, thus, facing increasing pressure to broaden their collections base, and diversify the audience base to include the un-represented and excluded population(Black, 2005). Museums in the 21st century face the challenge to become customer-centric rather than being product-centric to survive and excel and become centres of entertainment and learning. Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum of London is an example of one such museum which has accepted the need of changing with the world.

The advantages and disadvantages of social networking

Websites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin have not only enamoured millions of users but have also become a crucial part of their daily life. There are numerous social network sites. Though, technically they are homogeneous, but heterogeneous as far as acculturation is concerned. Some sites erode the distances between the social groups and bring them closer to each other, while others provide a platform for strangers of similar interest, beliefs, and opinions to associate with each other. Then there are social sites which enable people to connect through mobile connectivity, share videos and photographs etc. Whatever basis a social network site follows, ultimately its main purpose is to bring social groups at one place and initiate interaction between them. The powerful technology which is used in the social networking sites has resulted in a steep fall in the cost involved in processing and communicating information (Baily, 2008).
