Answers:

1. Could you adopt a child knowing that he/she suffered from the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) or FAE condition?

Yes, we will adopt a child knowing that he or she is suffering from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome because there are management options available to comfort these children’s with a normal happy life.

However, the fetal alcohol syndrome is the most severe condition of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) because that persist permanent damages in the body. But, still managing the child with special care, loving home, positive behavior and specific medication it is possible to adopt a child with FAS (Conrad & Barker, 2010).

2. How would you address a child in your classroom who suffers from FAS or FAE?

To address an FAS child in the classroom, I will follow the below-described techniques that are specially designed for teaching these children.

  • Getting help of special education administrator to access the information regarding characteristics of children suffering from FAS
  • I will gather information about academic background, family information, on-going medications of child, the strength, and weaknesses of child
  • I will talk to student in an informal manner providing a level of comfort
  • I will try to gather the students interest level, friendships, concerns and learning experiences
  • Further, the “Individual Education Plan” will be developed for determining the teaching practice for this child depending on collected information (Conrad & Barker, 2010).

3. How would you manage the other children in your classroom who has an FAS or FAE affected peer?

I will manage other children in class who have FAS or FAE peers by providing them “Behavioural Training” that includes friendship skill development to increase communication with their peers, executive function training to improve their tolerance, understanding and sympathy towards the sufferers of FAS and guide them to support their peers in every prospect of life by providing support and care (Mattson et al. 2011).

4. Why or why could you not adopt and/or teach a child affected with the syndrome?

The disabled children are part and parcel of our society they can’t be discriminated from normal children. These sufferers of FAS need emotional, physical and psychological support in their upbringing, for this reason, I will surely teach or adopt a child suffering from this syndrome because for me they are equal to other normal children.
